My experience of staying in the Support Centre was 16 years ago when my mother received her kidney transplant. To be able to talk to people who understood exactly what you were experiencing was beyond words and the fact I was in walking distance of my mother at all times was such a reassurance (you have no Idea how much rural drivers hate driving in Dublin!!)

My brother suffered from end stage kidney disease which meant long stays at Beaumont Hospital. The proximity of the Centre to the hospital and the provision of a phone in the bedroom with a direct line to the unit meant that on two occasions when / was called to his bedside in the early hours of the morning because of his deteriorating condition, I was with him within minutes and these were his own words’ you staying so close to the hospital gives me courage!

The Support Centre is a v special place for all Renal Patients attending Beaumount Hospital. There was no comparison between it and the hotel. The hotel was comfortable but like all hotels it was impersonal..one never met any other patients…travelling to and from the hospital for bloods…fear of infection with so many people coming and going from all over the world. Too much toing and froing for sick people….As a patient i just want our Support Centre back.

Our children are not able to attend local hospitals for their reviews and typically attend Dublin every 4 to 6 weeks. Children on dialysis can be travelling 3 or 4 times per week. I know of families driving up from the country at 3 and 4 in the morning to get there in time. We need our centre reopened for them.
